A member asked:

How can any vaccine protect someone for life? don't antibodies eventually leave the body? why do some last and others dont?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Immunologiic memory : Antibody levels do decrease over time, but prolonged immunity is provided by immunologic memory cells. On future exposure to an antigen (infection) they greatly shorten the effective response time giving long lasting protection (immunity). The duration and effectiveness of this immunologic memory varies with the particular agent, but pertussis shows it may not be as long as previously believed.
