A member asked:

How does getting tetanus vaccine protect you after exposure. isnt it like other vaccines that are given prior to exposure to allow body to build anti bodies before exposure?

It takes time for the germs gained in exposure to lead to development of tetanus. Post exposure vaccine, if given soon enough, alerts the body's immune system to build antibodies to stop the tetanus toxin from causing the affliction. Pre-exposure vaccine, if within 5-10 yr, depending on the wound type, should be adequate protection.

If you have had prior tetanus vaccination, a booster dose will raise the antibody level in a couple of days, which is faster than tetanus to develop from a wound.
