Antihistamine : In addition to phlebotomy to control the level of his hemoglobin, some medication also can be used to relief symptomatology. For itching, he can get medication like anti histamine- like benadryl, (diphenhydramine) Claritin etc. Also, try to avoid using hot water. Hot/warm water exposure can cause the release of histamine and cause the itch. Discuss with your hematolgist further.
