A Pap: Looks at cells scraped from the cervical surface for evidence of cancer, or pre-cursors or cancer graded from low to high grade dysplasia. They cannot discern bacterial infection or etiology, but provide information about risk, need for follow up, further screening or need for biopsy.

Trauma: Inflammation is a reactive change. It is caused by an infection in many cases, but trauma, reaction to tampons, douches, etc can cause this.
