Is there a way for a mental health professional to diagnose a sociopath?

Yes: A sociopath is known as antisocial personality disorder according to the dsm-iv. The most important part of diagnostics is a good clinical interview. In addition, several measures of personality assess for antisocial traits and can be used to support the information gained during an interview.

Antisocial: The modern clinical term for sociopathy is antisocial personality disorder. The hallmark of this disorder is the person seems to have no conscience, or sense of morality, or right or wrong. This person cannot empathize with others, is opportunistic, predatory, and often thrill seeking. An example of this would be Charles Manson. Any licensed mental health professional can make this diagnosis.
