CLARIFY?: Not sure what you mean by "self -harm". Do you mean suicidal or self injury. Suicidal can be a part of severe depression but also other disorders. Self injury is typically a part of a personality disorder "borderline".

Many causes: Self-harm may reflect depression, but it can have many causes. It is a serious symptom. If you have it or a one close to you dose, seek a professional assessment. Be sure to be honest about what is going on: too often, people are ashamed that they are hurting themselves and hide it. If it has happening deliberately and repeatedly, it will not go away on its own.
