ESR is a marker of: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a marker of inflammation, thus high inflammatory processes cause ESR to be higher. Infections, cancers, uncontrolled rheumatologic diseases, and endovascular inflammation(i.e. Arteritis) are examples. Thus, elevated ESR values suggest inflammatory conditions which should be sought and treated. Esr is not a complication, but a marker! consult doc. Good luck.
