Bipolar: That depends on the frequency of relapses, the duration of the episodes, how long the person has been diagnosed with bipolar illness, what medications are prescribed, family history of bipolar, compliance issues, and how long the person has been off of the medications.

I think so: If i understand your question correctly, a person with bipolar disorder may, especially in severe cases, relapse to the point of losing touch with reality. Sadly, sometimes the person may become suicidal requiring hospitalization for safety purposes. Some factors which increase one's chances for relapse are non-adherence to the medication and substance abuse.
