GERD or open mouth?: Throats hurt from infection, inflammation, or dryness. Let's assume that after 2 antibiotics you don't have a bacterial infection. Mono, a viral infection, can cause sore throat for weeks. You're a little old for that. Mouth breathing when sleeping drys out your throat causing pain. Gerd (acid reflux) irritates the throat. Both are common at age 40. Talk to your doctor about these possibilities.
