Yes: There is a list of entities that can cause blue pigmentation in the mouth. It is true that melanoma in the mouth is rare. It is best to see an oral surgeon who can do an exam, take a thorough history and determine if a biopsy is needed. Just for piece of mind you might decide to do the biopsy should she or he recommend it as well. Don't get worked up about it until you see the specialist.

What's it look like?: 'dark' is a relative term. There are a number of things that can produce a dark spot. Melanoma, however, is very dark...Inky black. I don't see it frequently, and it's a different kind of dark from most other pigmented oral lesions.
