Can't tell.: Go to your dentist and have him check it. It may be that he will wants biopsy of the spot. That will probably answer your concerns.

Not necessarily : There are a lot of things tha can show up as dark spots in the mouth, most of which are rather benign. It definitely requires follow-up however, in the event that this dark spot is something more ominous. Don't lose sleep over it, but definitely follow up as your dentist recommends.
