Pain meds: I imagine you are on pain medication because of the discectomy. A common side effect of these medications is constipation. Take as little medication as you can, or ask your doctor what non narcotic medication to take for pain. Drink a lot of water. Eat foods high in fiber. Avoid cheese and other foods you know constipate you. Get up and move around a lot. Use a stool softener. Good luck!

Maybe pain meds: Narcotic pain mediation can cause constipation. Ask your surgeon about non- narcotic alternatives.

Surgeon: If you are having severe abdominal pain and are badly constipated, please get immediately evaluated by either your surgeon or your primary provider. If the surgery was within 1-2 weeks, you could be having issues with bowel motility such as ileus. Most often the constipation is medication related and non-emergent, but if the pain is severe you need a hands-on evaluation.
