It may take longer: Sometimes the change in the way you walk will affect the opposite side (left hip). You may benefit from physical therapy.

Not unsual: It is not unusual to have "residual pain" after microdiscectomy in my experience. After all, just because the nerve is decompressed does not mean it goes back to normal instantaneously. This often takes a few months to sometimes several months. Make sure you keep your appointments with your surgeon and tell him/her what you are experiencing.

Yes/No: Surgery will remove the disc so it will not heal normally but can result in reduction in pain and resolving any lasting nerve damage due to the disc herniation. Healing can take up to 3 months. Healing on its own will take time and may keep the integrity of the disc intact which may be the best at keeping the disc as normal as possible. Healing on its own can take up to 6-9 months or longer.
