Blood test for spinal bifida?

MSAFP.: The maternal serum Alpha feto protein (msafp) test is a blood test that can be given to the mother during her pregnancy. If the levels are increased, it should be followed up by two tests - an ultrasound of the fetal spine and amniocentesis of the mother's amniotic fluid (to test for alpha-fetoprotein and acetylcholinesterase).

Some: There may be genetic determinants of spina bifida (eg welsh ancestry). Folic acid deficiency in pregnancy is a leading cause of this abnormality--so maybe a Folic Acid bllod level would be more helpful than genetic testing--unless there is a family history of spina bifida. After conception an early fetal ultrasound will be helpful.
