Staged evaluation: This study of the GI system allows an indirect visualization of the structures involved. The study can identify irregularities in the lining of these structures that could allow the dr to focus on a specific area for closer, direct study. Endoscopy (a scope placed in a structure) can be directed to a specific area where a problem may originate.If normal, workup moves to other possibilities.

Answers: The GI studies will provide answers to help your 8 yo. It is right to start with common meds to deal with the sx you described. When clinical response is not optimal, GI study is needed. Keep in mind that all meds have side effects and they may confound the overall presentation. Sounds like your doc is working up the process appropriately, hang in there.
