Strep: Nutritionally deficient streptococci may be a frequent causes of endocarditis and bacteremia in humans. Growth in standard laboratory media depends upon adding metabolites, including cysteine, thiol compounds, and activated forms of vitamin b6 (pyridoxal and pyridoxamine). The problem is more in growing the bug than in treating it, since in some ways it may be more susceptible to penicillin.
