Damage to kidney: Generally protein is filtered out from the urine by the kidney and when there is a problem with the filter "kidney" it cannot maintain the function and nephrologists , kidney doctors have to investigate the cause , which may be serious.

It can be a sign: Proteins are normally filtered through the kidney and sent back into the blood. If there is protein in the urine it means there are holes in the system that are allowing the protein to leak out. This leak can be caused by damage to the kidney. That is why physicians will check patient's urine for proteins as it is a sign of kidney damage.
