Ringworm: Shampoo with selenium sulfide (1%-2.5%), zinc pyrithione (1%-2%), or ketoconazole used two to three times weekly at home can help decrease shedding of spores, decrease spread of the infection to other people, and should be used together with the oral medications. Shampoos include selsun, selsun blue, selsun gold for women, and nizoral. But oral meds like Lamisil (terbinafine) will also be needed.

Won't work alone: In the scalp, ringworm (tinea) gets down into the root structure of the hair. OTC fungal creams or shampoos can help remove the surface visible lesions, but they are re-formed by the deep germs. You can use whatever you find available but will need to have your doc see the kid and confirm your diagnosis.A prescription oral med taken for a month or more is provably needed.
