Pills are needed: The fungus gets into the hair follicles that are deep in the skin, and shaving only trims the exposed hair shaft. It is unlikely that topical creams will penetrate deeply enough on scalp hair follicles, but it is usually effective on body ringworm. None of my patients have been successful without pills.
