UNDER the ribs?: There is cartilage at the bottom edge of the rib cage. Inflammation there is called costochondritis. A doctor can tell if the "nodules" are just the regular shape of cartilage (which can feel lumpy), or if the "nodules" are some other disorder. That means a primary care doctor should examine the "nodules". If it is just costochondritis, then otc Motrin or advil (ibuprofen) may help.
