A member asked:

Are dermatologists that perform facelifts also plastic surgeons? is there a plastic surgeon degree?

No and No: Dermatologists are not plastic surgeons, unless they complete a fellowship in plastic surgery. There is no degree in plastic surgery, only board certification.

No and yes: Dermatology is a separate specialty from plastic surgery, and each has their own very different training and certifications. Are you sure you are not confusing Botox injections, which a dermatologist might possibly do, with a face lift?

Different training: Plastic surgery is a specialized area in the discipline of surgery with its own board and training programs apart from dermatology, a specialized area of internal medicine with its own board and training programs. Some dermatologists learn to hold a scalpel but their surgeries are limited to the skin.

Surgery vs. Surgeon: A "plastic surgery" is a surgery meant to change the appearance of the face. A (facial) plastic surgeon is a doctor who has undergone a surgical bresidency training program. I would recommend seeking a facelift surgeon who is board certified by the american board of facial plastic & reconstructive surgery (abfprs) or the american board of plastic surgery (abps). Review their work & ask questions.

NO: There are separate boards for dermatology and plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons do not have the same skill set and training as dermatologists, and dermatologists do not have the same training as plastic surgeons. One is not a substitute for another.

Facelift: Dear pequenita, for a facelift, i would recommend seeing a facial plastic surgeon or a plastic surgeon. Look at before and after pictures to see what you like. Best, nima shemirani.

Not exactly: Cosmetic surgeon is a term used by doctors of many specialties that perform cosmetic procedures. The term "plastic surgeon" is used by doctors that have had specialty training and passed the board exam by the american board of plastic surgery.

Not quite: The type of specialist you are is determined primarily by the type of residency training you do. So, if you do a residency in dermatologist - you become a dermatologist, and if you do a residency in plastic surgery, you're a plastic surgeon - assuming in both cases, you pass the exams. These days, many docs who are not plastic surgeons are offering cosmetic procedures - please do your research.

Surgery: Surgery should be performed by surgeons. Surgeons undergo specialized training to acquire the skills to operate on patients. There are several tracts for plastic surgery. Facial plastic surgeons are head an neck surgeons who undergo additional training in plastic surgery of the head and neck region. General plastic surgeons undergo additional training after several years of general surgery.
