A 38-year-old member asked:

does the adrenal gland need to be removed with kidney cancer surgery?

No: The adrenal gland is a small but very important organ that sits on top of each kidney. During kidney cancer surgery, it has been traditionally removed as part of the surgery to remove the kidney cancer. However, there is a lot of recent data to show that it does not need to be removed with the kidney as long as certain criteria are met such as size of the kidney tumor, location of tumor, etc.

No, but depends: In the older days, it was taught to remove adrenals with kidneys for the treatment of rcc. A lot has change and the adrenal does not need to be removed unless there is or suspected infiltration of an upper pole tumor into the adrenal gland. Then again that would also increase the stage if indeed there is cancer in the ipsilateral adrenal gland.

A 34-year-old member asked:

Is it safe to have lasik eye surgery while pregnant?

6 doctor answers24 doctors weighed in
Dr. David Zisow
Obstetrics and Gynecology 47 years experience
No: Lasik is "safe" from the perspective of risks of harm to the mother or fetus but, "will the procedure be effective"? Pregnancy is associated with visual accuity changes related to fluid retention and corneal edema. Elective vision correction surgery is best done in a baseline non-pregnant condition to achieve long term good results. More than "what meets the eye" must be considered here.
A 50-year-old member asked:

I just found a lump in my breast that is very tender. Im pregnant, so my breasts are changing. Could it be breast cancer? Should I be alarmed?

Not likely: Any new breast lump that you find (even in pregnancy) should be evaluated by your physician. Even pregnant women can rarely develop breast cancer, but this is more likely a benign condition like a clogged milk duct. Your doctor will decide if any additional testing is needed.

Ask urologist: If your stones are a particular kind then you can modify your diet. Drink plenty of water with the next pregnancy.

How painful is the' knee surgery to repair a torn mcl?

Dr. Frederick Buechel, jr. md
Orthopedic Surgery 26 years experience
Pain is subjective: Some people are very tolerant of pain from surgery and some are very pain sensitive. Some do great with pain control, some have a very difficult time getting a medication that controls their pain and does not make them nauseous. Most isolated mcl tears are not surgically repaired and heal with bracing. Pain associated with the repair really depends on the technique used on the repair.

Stage 3 breast cancer her2 positive how many herceptin (trastuzumab) cycle she must undergo?

2 doctor answers9 doctors weighed in
Dr. Romeo Mandanas
Hematology and Oncology 38 years experience
Up to 1 year's worth: Herceptin (trastuzumab) can be given together with initial chemotherapy for the first 4-6 months then subsequently by itself for a total of 1 year. If chemotherapy was given first without Herceptin (trastuzumab) then Herceptin (trastuzumab) can be given for a full year by itself. The usual cycle runs every 3 weeks (17-18 cycles in one full year).

The optimal treatment duration is currently unknown. Trials are being done to see if short term therapy is just as beneficial with less side effects, like cardiac dysfunction. For now, one year of treatment is accepted as the time period of therapy.
