Depends: Narcotic originally referred to any psychoactive compound with any sleep-inducing properties. It became most often linked to opiates such as heroin. The term narcotic takes on different meaning in certain situations. In the us, any illegal drug is considered a narcotic. As a pharmacological classification it has even more meanings. As is stands, amphetamines are not considered narcotics.
