Many things: There are many things that can cause spine pain, these include problems with the spine itself such as damaged discs, ligaments and muscle tendons and fractures. Other "internal" problems can cause the spine to hurt like problems with the kidneys, blood vessels, infections and tumors. Most spine pain is not caused by these more unusual causes. If you are having really bad spine pain, see your doctor.

Usually structural: Most often, the pain is from a structural element (e.g. disc issues, facet joint issue, muscle) but uncommonly (rare) can be infection, connective tissue disorder/spinal arthritis, cancer, or something congenital-meaning born with). If not getting better, please see your doctor!
