How does a doctor know when you need a dialysis treatment?

Kidney function: A good example or analogy to how the kidney functions is comparing it to a washing machine, the kidney cleans the blood. You could make urine even if the kidney is loosing function. The function is measured by a blood test, from which a GFR is calculated. Gfr of 90 means the kidneys are cleaning the blood very well, and decreasing values like less than 10 is when you need dialysis.

Your symptoms + test: If your total remaining kidney function keeps you symptom free and blood tests do not have dangerous chemical abnormalities then you do not need dialysis yet. Your nephrologist will continue to work with you to protect your remaining kidney function. If it is clear you will need dialysis in the future your nephrologist will also discuss different options and help you prepare for a safe start.
