Retinal holes: Retinal holes can either be observed or lasered. If the retinal hole is low risk, they are observed. If high risk (symptomatic, high near-sightedness, history of prior retinal detachment, etc), then laser should be performed.

Depends: It depends on the location and severity of the holes. If it is at risk for causing a retinal detachment, then in-office laser retinopexy (or less frequently, freezing treatment called cryoretinopexy) is performed to lessen the risk of retinal detachment. The laser does not close the hole, it surrounds the hole like a fence to lessen the risk of the hole becoming a retinal detachment.
