It depends: Not all dog bites need stitches. In fact, closing any type of bite wound can often be a problem as infection may be more likely. The first priority is assessing any deep injury (nerve, tendon or bone) by examination. If there is no deep injury to treat, then good primary wound care with thorough cleaning, tetanus immunization and preventative antibiotics are indicated.
