Patient motivation: Bariatric surgery patients must be motivated to lose weight. They are typically seen by social workers, nutritionists, and psychologists in addition to the surgeon to ensure that a good support system is in place. There are many types; several involve forming new intestinal connections to bypass the stomach +/- part of the small intestine to limit intake and induce some degree of malabsorption.

Bariatric surgery : You get evaluated by the surgeon, dietician, and social worker or psychologist. Then get a thorough medical evaluation. This can take 6 weeks. You have surgery and then take 1-2 weeks to recover. If you are 100lbs overweight, you may lose 60-70 lbs in a year to 18 months.
