What is a granuloma?

Benign mass: In a granuloma, a group of macrophages (scavenger cells) stick tightly together to wall something off. It's the basis of the normal response to many things, from tuberculosis to a splinter to an ingrown hair. A calcified, stable nodule on your chest x-ray is likely an old granuloma; most of us here in kansas have one from meeting histoplasmosis. They're seen in many forms in many illnesses.
