Yes: St. Johns wort can treat depression but there is a problem. You can never depend that the strength of the herb is what is reported on the box. There are no controls. Nothing that I am aware of helps ocd, except ssri's and psychosurgery!

Herbs: Also l-tryptophane & same, but with all herbs, results are mixed and benefits at best are minimal.

St. John's Wort: St. John's wort 300 mg taken 3 times a day has long been recognized as a natural treaent for depression. Other natural remedies include 5-htp 200-300mg taken 1-3 times a day. Try taking this at night, initially. Then increase the number of times taken during the day as needed. Also, regular exercise, meditation, and getting at least 8 hours of sleep have been proven to be extremely helpful.

How do "postpartum" and regular depression differ?

Timing and Cause: Postpartum depression usually occurs in the first 6 weeks after delivery, but it can occur anytime during the first year. Both postpartum and "regular" depression have similar features (depressed mood, appetite and sleep disturbance, mood swings, etc.). In my experience, postpartum depression responds quicker to medical therapy than major depressive disorder. Contact your doctor if needed.

What should I know if I have depression and I want to get pregnant?

Dr. Jeff Livingston

Discuss with doctor: Ideally people dealing with depression should have a discussion with their doctor before pregnancy. In some cases the medication can be stopped. In other cases, the medication should be continued or changed after a discussion regarding the potential complications. Depression is serious and often the known risks of untreated depression far outweigh the low risk of fetal exposure to medication.

How can I treat depression while pregnant?

Dr. Patrick Weix

Depression: Of course, this will differ for every person, but the important thing is that it can be treated during pregnancy. For some this will mean adjusting or changing meds. For some, it may mean seeing a therapist or counselor. Your OB can help to coordinate care. Some patients find their symptoms better during pregnancy, but some do not.

Are there any nutritional and/or herbal supplements that help those with eds?

2 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in
Dr. Leonard Lado
Psychiatry 32 years experience
EDS: If you are referring eds as erectile dysfunction syndrome the most logical and effective action is to first be evaluated. There are many reversible causes such as low testosterone, medication side effects, reduce vascular flow to penile gland, performance anxiety, fear of premature ejaculation, anxiety and mood disorders. Even if there was such herb you much check your prostate to make sure its ok.

Yes: It is often hard to treat and identify, since both can co-exist, however a helpful tip is sudden deterioration in a stable patient with alzheimers.
