TMJ "Specialist" : While not a recognized specialty in dentistry there are those dentists who limit their practice to tmd = TMJ pain. Referral by your general dentist in your area. Indeede if severe an oral surgeon may then be involved.

Both: Need to make sure that your problem is a tmj/tmd issue. I would not rule out seeing both.

See a TMJ Dentist: A pcp can help rule out that you don't have an ear infection, a sinus infection or other neurologic problems. Many dentists don't treat tmj, so find one who is familiar with it. I think you'll be surprised at how quickly you can improve. I consistently find that patients underestimate how many head and neck symptoms are related to dental causes.

Specialist Dentist: A primary care md will know next to nothing about TMJ issues. The same applies to a general practice dentist. Ask your dental society to recommend a dentist with expertise in TMJ disorders.
