Work of therapy: The work of therapy also involves discussing and working through feelings towards your therapist, or "transference." transference means that one "transfers" intense feelings towards important people in early life, onto the therapist. Understanding these patterns allows you to make changes in how you relate to others. This work also helps dissipate the intense feelings towards your therapist.

Therapy: One of the goals of therapy is to understand the transference (feelings that come up in therapy that have to do with the past experiences of the patient), and to find ways of not behaving based on those past experiences. Thus, for some kinds of therapists, the fact that there is a transference response is essential to having a good outcome.
