Any number of: Things can cause anger/irritability. From depression to mania to anxiety to ocd. A good diagnostic interview with a psychiatrist could definitely help.

Overactive amygdala: The patient may have a constitutionally large amygdala and register fear and defend his/herself with minor threat cues. Ptsd/ borderline personality/ or bipolar disorder are also part of the differential diagnosis.Think cornered animal and respond with respect, tact, and a safe emotional distance.
