Inappropriate : Prescribing gentamicin for eye redness without an examination is really not very helpful. Though the drug is unlikely to have harmed you, there are many causes for a red eye that have nothing to do with a bacterial infection, which i presume is what your doctor thought he was treating. Insist that the doctor see you or obtain an ophthalmology consultation for you.

Wrong treatment: Gentamicin is a terrific antibiotic for the eye but is ineffective if the cause of redness is something else. If the redness is still present after 2-3 days, then seek an ophthalmologist to determine an alternate cause. The gentamicin almost certainly did not harm but might not be the right treatment.
