Stock up on fresh!: This is a time to have fun with food. A balanced diet is key. A nutritionist or information provided by OB can lay out the number and type of calories. Beyond that it is up to expectant couple to buy (or grow) the foods that meet the dietary requirements. Farmers markets, friends, family can all provide nourishing basics and foods that are tasty (like produce, tofu, beans, dairy, lean meats etc).

Variety: Healthy organic pesticide free fruits, vegetables and range fed hormone free meats, fish low in mercury (see environmental working group website for list), etc. Avoid sugar and carbohydrates as they will make you gain unneeded weight and are poor in nutrients! make sure you take a good prenatal vitamin.
