Membrane stripping: You cannot do it, but your doctor can do membrane stripping which is separation of the amniotic membranes from the uterine wall. This leads to the release of prostonglandins, bioactive substances known to play a key rôle in labor induction.

Unproven techniques.: Some midwives recommend a large bouncing ball to achieve cervical ripening at term. Others do a vigorous cervical examination (stripping of the amniotic membranes) or offer nipple stimulation as an alternative. My approach to all those techniques is the same: unproven benefit and possible fetal risks do not justify using any of those options. Nature will take care of cervical ripening for you.
