I hear contradicting numbers on how often should someone exercise & for how long. i exercise 4x/week for 20-40 minutes each session. too little/much?

That's OK: It depends on why you exercise. If you are trying to build up your heart stamina or lose weight, aerobic moderate intensity exercise 30 minutes 5x/week is advised. If you have none of the above issues and you are doing it to maintain your wellbeing, you can exercise as much as you want, 2-3 times/ week sounds reasonable.
