Fungal tends to itch: Skin rashes that are itchy tend to either be due to eczema or allergies- in which case hydrocortizone cream may help. A fungal infection can be itchy as well (ringworm tends to be scaly and round, slightly flatter in the center)- in which case an otc antifungal such as lotrimin/lamisil can help. Bacterial rashes are more likely to be painful or have a center of pus within. If unsure, call your dr.

Vaginal discharge: There are several ways to determine etiology of a vaginal infection. Most require an exam & collection & testing of discharge: stains, chemical tests, cultures & gene probes can tell us if it is fungal, bacterial or parasitic. Patients who have frequent infections can learn the characteristice of their infection & sometimes can self treat. Its important to assure no std is present. See your gyne!
