Not necessarily: While any surgery carries risks, the amount of bone removal for placement of a paddle electrode is relatively small. Some electrodes can be placed through needles without bone removal, but paddle electrodes allow for more sophisticated patterns of stimulation and this can translate into greater efficacy. There is risk for development of a blood clot with in the spinal canal but the risk is low.

Paddl: All surgeries carry risk. It is preferable to have percutaneous leads for the permanent. Latest technologies allow for very sophicticated programming whether paddle or percutaneous leads. It is always preferable to have the least invasive method.
