A member asked:

Is it normal for big toes to start to point outward as we age? just a little bit, like 5 degrees from fully straight.

No: You are probably reffering to the beginning of a bunion deformity where the bone of the 1st metatarsal becomes prominent on the inside of the foot and the 1st toe starts to turn toward the 2nd toe.

Not Really: A small deviation is no problem. If you are concerned see a podiatrist.

5 degrees: Is not bad. As they move more than that it sounds like you are developing a bunion possibly. Particularly, if it was straight before. There are some excercises one can do to help strengthen the abductor halucis muscle, and consideration of an orthotic may be a good idea.
