More info needed: How old is your son? Does he have any other medical problems like diabetes? Has he ever had frostbite? Has he ever had any injury to his feet? If he gets up and walks at night do they get better? See you primary care doctor for a good history, physical exam and lab tests. It is not right to speculate about causes with the limited info here.

Should be : Evaluated in person. You don't state his age..There are conditions related to growth plates that when severe can casue pain, which in turn can cause guarding of the patient or restriction motion. There are condtions that are more painful at night...X-rays sound prudent.
