Which thumb joint?: I'm not certain which joint but if it's the one closest to the fingertip this is osteoarthritis usually. Usually eventually gets better but you can try hot water, hot paraffin wax, isotonot gloves - that all my help.

Likely arthritis: Arthritis of the finger joints causes bone spurs and cysts. These can be hard and painful, with some stiffness. See a board certified orthopaedic hand surgeon for x-rays and treatment.
