It depends: What caused the fluid, ascites, liver, pneumonia, ...Cancer? I have a guy that five years ago had half lung filled w fluid and he is great today.

Depends: Depends on how much the fluid is and where the fluid is. If it is large enough to cause breathing problem( assuming in lung) then without intervention he/ she may die. If there is a large effusion in the heart, that may compromise heart function.
