How sever e is anemia when it causes you to have transfusions

Significant: Most md's will not transfuse unless the HGB is less than 10gm/dl and more recently this cutoff has been lowered to less than 9gm/dl. The average range for HGB is 12-16. Need for transfusion means you are significantly low. There are many causes. See your physician for further work-up.

Sounds severe: If transfusions are needed on a continued basis, it is severe. Needs to be evaluated to find a cause for the anemia. Hope this helps.

Quite severe: Many forms of anemia do not require blood transfusions. They can be managed in other ways. However, there are some forms of anemia that do require blood transfusions. We typically try to avoid unnecessary transfusions, but thankfully we have many blood donors who give blood so that we can treat patients with blood transfusions if need be.
