PancreasInflammation: Over 90% of cases of acute pancreatitis are due to passage of a gallstone into the bile duct or alcohol use. Most cases are mild and self-limiting, requiring a 3-5 day hospitalization; pancreatitis may be severe as often as 10% of the time, leading to prolonged convalescence and potentially life-threatening complications. Rx centers on supportive care, mgmt of complications+/-stone removal (ercp).

Inflammation: Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. Most are due to gallstones, some are due to alcohol intake and a few other causes. It can be from mild to severe. Most mild to moderte cases take a few days to a week to recover from. More severe cases take longer.
