It depends: The cause is important - with gallstones it can continue until the obstruction is removed, with alcohol its really variable recurrent episodes often last longer with some residual pain even between episodes. With other causes such as drug induced, elevated triglycerides, etc it can be days to weeks. In my hospital practice I'd say the average time in the hospital is a week.
