Yes, sometimes: There are different types of thyroid cancer. One type, medullary thyroid cancer, is inherited 25% of the time due to a mutation of the ret gene. The other types of thyroid cancer are not inherited.

Perhaps: Known genetic mutations are seen in thyroid cancers: braf in papillary; kras in follicular; ret gene (usually point mutation) involving 10q11.2 in medullary carcinoma; p53 in undifferentiated carcinoma. However, "inherited" types of thyroid carcinoma are much less common - although medullary carcinoma is the most common type.

Genetic.: Thyroid cancer can be genetic but is most often sporadic (random). Your doctor will send you for genetic valuation if he/she suspects its a hereditary issue.
