Try other exercises: Any piece of exercise equipment that causes back pain sounds like a bad idea. So many people hurt their backs and end up with some disability as the years go by, and they get older. If the muscles feel only slightly sore the day after a workout, and the soreness no longer happens after getting used to the machine and workouts, then the machine might be ok to use.

Maybe: Sometimes, when just starting to exercise with no recent history of routine exercise, you can get muscle aches. If it persists, stop and change your exercise routine. You may need some guidance for this if there is a history of back pain and that can be through your physician or a physical therapist.
