Moderation: You can eat almost anything in moderation. Large quantities of beer, red meats and shellfish can cause flare-ups in some people.

Healthy food: If your gout is caused by food and not high blood pressure medicine, try to avoid the following types of food. Foods that are high in purines cause uric acid problems and gout. These generally are: red meat, shell food, sea food, liver, sweetbreads, red wine, beer. Doesn't leave much left to eat but you'll feel better.
