Four: The four main types are 1) papillary - very good prognosis, 2) follicular - not quite as good, 3) medullary - intermediate prognosis and may be associated with a familial syndrome called men, 4) anaplastic - very rapidly growing. Lymphomas occasionally occur in the thyroid and metastases from other cancers uncommonly occur in the thyroid, as well.
